Our Heroes

How to Become a Hero

Each and every person who adopts a pet from Texas Humane Heroes and gives them a loving, forever home is a hero because they saved the life of that animal, and made room in our shelter for more homeless pets to be rescued from kill shelters in the area.

TXHH Heroes: Alice and the Benskin Family!

Featured Hero:  1st Quarter 2015 Adoption Date: July 2013 Their Story: My husband and I were married in 2010, and at the time we were both still in college. We lived in a tiny little apartment and I dreamed of the day that we would finish school, move, and get a dog to complete our little family. We moved to the Austin area in late 2013. As a part of our “getting settled” I set out on a quest to find us a dog before we both started our respective jobs. A home is not a home without a dog after…

Hero: Bailey and the Johnson Family!

Featured Hero:  4th Quarter 2014 Adoption Date: February 2012 Their Story: My name is Bridget Johnson, and I want to tell you about our dog Bailey, who we adopted from TXHH on Valentine's Day 2012. We had been looking for an older dog for a while, as we didn't want to have to train a puppy. We had been to a couple of shelters and found that although in theory we wanted an adult dog, every dog that tugged at our heartstrings was under the age of 6 months.       We were still not quite sure if we were ready to adopt,…

Hero: Vino, Hops and the Lopez Family!

Featured Hero: 3rd Quarter 2014 Adoption Date: September 2012 Their Story: My story starts in September of 2011 when I adopted a pit bull mix from a rescue group in Austin and named her Michi. We fell in love instantly- she was (and still is) the very best dog a girl could hope for. Fast forward to February of 2012 when I decided it was time to bring a new pet into the family. My fiancé Brandon, Michi and myself began a kitten search that led us to Texas Humane Heroes. We spent two hours playing with cats and kittens of…

Hero: Bo and the Holmes Family!

Featured Hero: 2nd Quarter 2014 Adoption Date: September 2012 Their Story: You know how you crave a cookie or potato chip...well, we craved PJ!  Several times a week me and my two little boys searched the TXHH website looking for our match!  We already have an older girl, Sophie, who likes to lounge around mostly; Fergi, a chihuahua who thinks she is a cat; and Dewey, a wired fox terrier who loves people and other pets and longed for a playmate.  We lost a black lab, Bonnie, several years ago and a lab/mix just holds a special place in my heart.  There…

Hero: Lenny & Timeka!

Featured Hero: 1st Quarter 2014 Adoption Date: June 2012 Their Story: I adopted Sammy in June 2012. I initially was looking for a teacup and remember when I saw Sammy; I felt he was too big. However, I traveled back out to Leander 2 weeks later to go to the SPCA. My inner voice told me to go back down the street to the Humane Society. Sammy was still there and I interacted with him. His demeanor was cool, calm, and collected. I took another dog out - a yorkie mix - but he was just a little too hyper. I had…
